Why do we call ourselves a "tribe"?

All - when reviewing the COST proposal there were some comments on the sentence "ENTOV-HVM builds on a robust tribe of stakeholders in the critical roles of innovators, through users, product packagers, buyers, funders, to marketeers and commercializers, and follows an emergent pattern of stakeholder relationships." The sentence appears in line 73 of the Technical Annex and is repeated in the section on "Mission & Policy". The comments mainly revolved around what the difference between a "network", a "web" and a "tribe" are, plus whether if there is a difference it is truly important.

In my opinion this is a quite important question, especially because the complete proposal revolves around an innovation "WEB" evolution process and heavily leverages the language and concepts of "Value NETWORKS". The workd "tribe" only appears twice (whereby the sentence it appears in is being repeated). Why does the term "tribe" appear?

Thinking back, the term "got into" the proposal off the back of a conversation with Sami - we didn´t really think consciously about using it. There was just some sympathy and acceptance - it "emerged" :) As many different discussions have progressed, the term "tribe" has been used regularly and has been easily picked up by everyone.

Thinking about the different terms I think / sense that the concept of "networks" is about "connectedness" and we see the emphasis in the areas of social and organizational "network" analysis. "Value Networks" build on the concepts of social and organizational network analysis in many ways; primarily though the introduction of beahviorally based "roles" and tangible and intangible exchanges in combination with a "shared purpose" makes it quite a different "beast". In my view the concept of a "tribe"leverages the concepts of (value) network analysis in the sense of looking at the "shared STORY" (not "shared purpose") which connects participants on a very human level - which is the basis for trustful relationships, servant leadership and extremely rapid decision making. People "warm" to the concept of a tribe - it is a very human term, "warm", "safe" etc....

I guess there are multiple PhDs etc that could be written on this subject, but for the moment I personally feel quite comfortable with being part of the ENTOV-HVM "tribe" and look forward to discovering the story that we share - and our "true" purpose as a "tribe" which may well differ significantly from what is appearing on paper :)

Hmmmm.... what is our story? Any thoughts? If stories lead to legacies then we may as well reflect on the legacies we wish to leave behind and how the ENTOV-HVM tribe might help achieve this?
