The Diffusion of Innovation Framework – Starting Model and Simulation
Dear all, as we now pick up pace to write our proposal “European
Knowledge Alliance for “Accelerating Diffusion Systems for Manufacturing
Innovations in Enterprises”(ADSMIE)” the need for a better understanding of the
core deliverable has grown. In light of this I have drafted a very first picture
of the potential system dynamics model that will form the foundation of the
complete work.
A readable image of the file can be found at https://cdn.website-editor.net/9374fbbd760f4d8bab0bf6287f5f6932/files/uploaded/Simulator%252020191110.jpg.
This model will simulate the diffusion of innovations in high
value manufacturing from ideation through market saturation. The model will be
created based on the whole product life cycles of participating industry
companies and then iteratively refined across the work packages. This model
will describe the relevant series of innovation ecosystems and we will then of
course also explore how to design ideas so that they flow through as quickly as
possible. The model will then be the basis for achieving the Erasmus+ Knowledge
Alliance program goals. This first model is of course only the very first step on
a long journey, yet I hope it will help increase clarity of where we are
heading.
The model is built using
the free personal learning edition of www.vensim.com.
The aim of the model will be to understand what it takes to
disruptively accelerate the diffusion of an idea from trigger to market
saturation with following obsolescence.
- The focus is the time from an idea being triggered to the market saturation of that idea.
- The left hand side of the model covers the manufacturing process from opportunity identification to product launch.
- The right hand side of the model covers the market diffusion process from innovators to laggards and obsolescence.
- Key influencers at the moment are “fruitfulness” of communications among stakeholders, and “sociability” which points to the degree of interactions between stakeholders. The model can be “gamed” by adjusting the slider values of these influencers.
