Mapping, Simulating, Tracking and Forecasting the Diffusion of Innovation from Ideation to Laggards - Where do we start?
Dear all – the
challenge is formidable but absolutely manageable!
For starters let
us remind ourselves that we begin with understanding product life cycle
managemant (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_lifecycle),
whole product life cycle management from a marketing perspective (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_life-cycle_management_(marketing))
and the diffusion of innovation paradigm (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diffusion_of_innovations).
While we ask our industry participants
to contribute their specific processes and models (even if for only parts oft
he journey, i.e. a research and development framework), there are robust and
well described models already out there we can use to prepare ourselves.
Based on past
experience an excellent first input are the product life cycle management
processes put forward by major software suppliers such as Siemens (https://www.plm.automation.siemens.com/global/en/products/collaboration/
and also broken down by industries) and SAP (i.e. https://wiki.scn.sap.com/wiki/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=26764).
When we dig deeper into these (and perhaps other offerings) we will see that
the process models (at all levels) are available and can be converted into a
living systems map, simulation, tracker and forecaster – as a desktop exercise!
We can then use that as the basis for first workshops with our industry
participants.
The image comes
from https://www.stechies.com/about-sap-erp-plm-variant-configuration-classification/
and nicely shows the generic product life cycle management process. With our
focus on extending the „Customer“ section to the diffusion of innovation curve
up to laggards and then taking an holistic living systems / innovation web
perspective (plus simulating etc the whole thing) we have defined a very unique
and worthwhile quest J
Workpackage 1
will use this approach to start things off – and perhaps before the project we
can start doing this on a smaller scale in collaboration with our industry
partners as well.
