WP 7 Validate Research Findings (as Experimental Innovation in Living Labs)

Dear all - this is a refined draft of the SEVENTH Erasmus+ Knowledge Alliance Workpackage with a focus on industrial whole product lifecycles. Comments appreciated as we work to refine and align with the potential workpackage owner. Please note that the supporting workpackages are intended for project participants either owning other workpackages or interested in supporting workpackages only. The image compares Picasso and Cezanne in their thinking about experimental innovation – see https://artandlogic.com/2016/09/picasso-vs-cezanne-experimental-innovation-software-development/). If you are interested in a supporting workpackage please contact oliver.schwabe@innovation-web.eu - you will be expected to contribute to shaping this and your own workpackage.

Description

This implementation workpackage applies the results of workpackage 6 “Create Design Principles for Rapid Diffusion of Innovative Ideas” across the network in living labs applying principles of experimental innovation. The aim of the workpackage is to validate year 1 and year 2 findings in the contexts where innovation actually occurs. The workpackage builds in particular on the efforts for workpackage 3 “Conduct Case Studies (as Living Labs)” and serves as an input to workpackage 8 “Discover and Launch Ideas in a Structured Manner (incl. Innovation Diffusion Monitoring Radar).  The workpackage will conduct a total of 12 living labs at each of the six participating manufacturing companies and six participating higher education institutions, whereby participation is opened to other interested parties in the project network and the region where the effort is being conducted. Each living lab will have a three day duration whereby the first day is focused on stage-setting and training. The second day will conduct a living lab with experimental innovation techniques with participation of stakeholders from all phases of the whole product lifecycle at the manufacturing organization. The third day will debrief results from the second day and provide final refinement of project results to date.

Tasks

The estimated start date is month #24 of the project and the estimated end date is month 33 of the project, although the team will continue to support other workpackages during the complete duration of the project. All tasks will be made transparent to the public as open access and public domain. The tasks of the workpackage are:
  • Review and adapt design guidelines for ideas provided by workpackage 6.
  • Prepare three day living labs with a focus on experimental innovation at six participating manufacturing organizations and six participating higher education institutions considering the results of all previous workpackages.
  • Conduct three day living labs at six participating manufacturing organizations and six participating higher education institutions.
  • Finalize design guidelines and simulator.
  • Prepare and hand-over design guidelines for the structured ideation approach in workpackage 8 “Discover and Launch Ideas in a Structured Manner (incl. Innovation Diffusion Monitoring Radar).”

Deliverables

The deliverables are outcomes of the tasks and will be made available in the public domain.
  • Adapted design guidelines for ideas provided by workpackage 6.
  • Three day living labs with a focus on experimental innovation at six participating manufacturing organizations and six participating higher education institutions considering the results of all previous workpackages.
  • Finalized design guidelines and simulator.
  • Design guidelines for the structured ideation approach in workpackage 8 “Discover and Launch Ideas in a Structured Manner (incl. Innovation Diffusion Monitoring Radar).”

Resourcing

This workpackage will run for 9 consecutive months and will be primarily resourced by two full time researchers.  Six supporting workpackages of 160 hours each support conducting the workpackage and one funded Masters project is planned as further aid to workpackage delivery.
