Variables of Innovation Web Evolution Speed - Reciprocity
The speed with which ideas evolve through the innovation web archetypes depends upon 12 (twelve) interdependent variables: Resilience, Reciprocity, Value Creation, Perceived Value, Asset Impact, Cost Benefit, Sequence, Structural Integrity (Density), Structural Dependency (Centrality), Agility, Number of Participants and Stability. These variables are explored in a series of blog postings and will be completed by the presentation of a parametric model describing their interdependencies and permitting the simulation and analysis of the overall innovation web evolution process, including the impact of relevant “interventions” needed to accelerate the idea across the diffusion of innovation curve.
This posting explores the variable “Reciprocity”. Reciprocity describes the extent to which transactions (ties) between Roles or Participants result in “return” transactions, whether immediately or at a different point in the overall sequence of exchanges.
The reciprocity of any innovation web (or combination of such) is given by the ratio of tangible and intangible transactions given and received between pairs of roles and or participants (molecules). The optimal reciprocity will hereby differ for each innovation web archetype. Upon achieving minimum reciprocity (along with all other performance indicators) the innovation web is reading for transitioning to the next archetype. The transition threshold value for minimum reciprocity is equal to being “above average” in comparison to a group of at least 13 comparative innovation webs in a similar context (for all performance indicators simultaneously) in order to permit the robust application of parametric assessment techniques for analysis. Whether or not this transition threshold has truly been achieved is also a qualitative judgement and thus requires validation and confirmation by all participants before commencing the transition process to the next archetype.
The image is drawn from https://www.infosurv.com/symbiosis-building-healthy-employee-relationships/ and is intended to illustrate how (sometimes very different) living systems co-flourish.
The symbol used for resilience is “↔” to illustrate the “give and take” nature of this perspective. This can also be understood as “symbiosis”, whereby a “minimum” value will exist at which point a return of the actual innovation web to its original state will no longer be possible. When resilience drops below that minimum value, then the innovation web will need to be returned to its previous stage, re-built and then re-transitioned when it reaches the relevant threshold values.
Example: In the research community web the relationship between innovator(s) and user(s) is triggered by the first (1) sequenced deliverable “Curiosity” which is offered to the user(s) by the innovator(s). The direction of analysis is hence from innovator(s) to user(s). Two (2) tangible deliverables are provided by the innovator(s) to the user(s), while one (1) tangible deliverable is returned from the user(s) to the innovator(s). The tangible reciprocity (from the perspective of the innovator(s) is therefore 2/1 = 200%. From an intangible perspective, four (4) intangible deliverables are provided by the innovator(s) to the user(s), while three (3) intangible deliverables are returned from the user(s) to the innovator(s). The intangible reciprocity (from the perspective of the innovator(s) is therefore 4/3 = 133%. From an overall perspective six (6) deliverables are provided from the innovator(s) to the user(s) and four (4) deliverables are provided from the user(s) to the innovator(s). The overall reciprocity is therefore 6/4=150%.
The reciprocity values for the innovation web archetypes are shown in the following table, whereby the direction of analysis is always based on the first sequenced deliverable between the roles.

Some theorists feel that asymmetric ties may be unstable. A network that has a predominance of reciprocated ties over asymmetric connections may be a more "equal" or "stable" network than one with a predominance of asymmetric connections. A lack of reciprocity sometimes indicates there is a more hierarchical structure.
